BlackTop OEM Satin Black looks glossier than expected when it is not mixed thoroughly, applied too heavily, or judged before its full 24-hour cure.
OEM Satin Black and Flat Black BlackTop rely on matting agents that settle at the bottom of the can. Mixing thoroughly, using a mechanical mixer like the KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer or at minimum a paint stir stick, repeatedly touching the bottom of the can and lifting, brings those agents back into suspension for a consistent matte finish. Two other factors also affect gloss level: coat thickness (apply BlackTop in thin coats only; medium or heavy coats trend glossier) and cure time (BlackTop OEM Satin Black often looks glossier than expected right after application, then mattes down as it cures; always judge the final sheen after a full 24-hour cure). If you want an even flatter finish, you can reduce BlackTop up to 20 percent with KBS #1 Thinner or xylene.
