Mix the KBS MAXX or KBS MAXX Clear Base first with a mechanical mixer on a variable speed drill until it is smooth, then measure 3 parts Base to 1 part MAXX Activator and mix again. Both are high solids coatings, and a drill-driven mixer brings all the components back together in a way a stir stick may not. That is what gives you the best looking and most durable finish.
Step by Step
- Mix the Base, color or clear, thoroughly with the KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer or a similar mixing blade on a variable speed drill until it is smooth and uniform.
- In a mixing cup, measure 3 parts of the mixed Base. A graduated cup such as the KBS Paint Mixing Cup makes this easy.
- Add 1 part MAXX Activator.
- Mix thoroughly again with the mechanical mixer.
- If your equipment calls for reduction, add KBS #1 Thinner or xylene, 5 to 10 percent for spraying, and mix again. Strain through a 100 micron filter before it goes in the gun.
- Apply it within the pot life. Do not return mixed material to the original can.
Why Mechanical Mixing Matters
KBS MAXX is about 60 percent solids by volume. That is a big part of why it is so durable, and it also means the solids settle in the can. The KBS MAXX directions call mixing well the key to long term durability and appearance. A mixing blade on a drill pulls everything off the bottom and back into suspension, and the Hurricane Paint Mixer does it in as little as 10 seconds.
KBS MAXX and KBS MAXX Clear Mix the Same Way
Both use the same MAXX Activator, the same 3 to 1 ratio, and the same 30 minute pot life. The KBS MAXX directions and KBS MAXX Clear directions give the full application details for each. Each KBS MAXX kit is packaged at 3 to 1 already: a quart is 24 oz of Base with 8 oz of Activator.
