Apply RustSeal when the product, the air, and the surface are all between 55 and 82 degrees F (13 to 28 degrees C), with relative humidity in the 30 to 80 percent range. RustSeal is moisture-cured, so humidity matters as much as temperature: higher humidity shortens cure time, lower humidity lengthens it, and a damp surface can bubble the coating and ruin adhesion.
Why Surface Temperature Matters
A cold frame rail in a warm shop is still a cold frame rail. Metal holds temperature far longer than the air around it, so a part brought in from an unheated garage can sit well below the air reading for hours. Coating a surface that is too cold slows the cure and hurts adhesion; coating one that is too hot flashes the solvent off before the film can flow out and level.
Humidity and Moisture Cure
RustSeal cures by absorbing moisture from the air, which is why it forms such a hard, non-porous shell. The ideal range is 30 to 80 percent relative humidity. Do not apply RustSeal in rainy or humid conditions where the surface cannot be kept dry, and never in thick or heavy coats: a heavy coat skins over on top and traps solvent gas underneath, which shows up as surface bubbling.
