Yes, RustSeal can be applied over another coating as long as that coating is fully cured and properly prepared. Be aware of one tradeoff before you start: applied over existing paint rather than bare metal, RustSeal may not permanently seal the rust underneath, though it still provides a durable, moisture-resistant coating.
Bare metal is always the stronger foundation. Like building a house, the foundation of a coating system matters. RustSeal delivers its best long-term protection applied directly to prepared bare metal, where it can penetrate the pores and seal the surface permanently.
How to Prepare an Existing Coating
- Check adhesion first. If the existing coating is not well adhered, use a wire wheel to remove all loose or failing areas before you do anything else. RustSeal over failing paint fails with the paint.
- Strip if you can. For previously painted surfaces, removing all the paint by chemical stripping and then running KBS Klean and RustBlast is the preferred route.
- If the paint cannot be fully removed, lightly scuff with 400 grit sandpaper and follow with KBS Klean. Scuffing gives the coating a profile to grip; KBS Klean removes the contamination that would otherwise block adhesion.
Frequently Asked Questions: RustSeal Over Existing Coatings
Yes, as long as the existing coating is fully cured. If the surface is glossy it should be lightly scuffed and thoroughly cleaned with KBS Klean first. If the existing coating is not well adhered, use a wire wheel to remove all loose or failing areas before surface preparation.
Not in the same permanent way. If RustSeal is applied over an existing painted coating rather than bare metal, it may not permanently seal the rust underneath, but it will provide a durable, moisture-resistant coating. To genuinely stop existing rust, get down to the metal and run the full 3 step system.
For previously painted surfaces where the paint cannot be fully removed, lightly scuff with 400 grit sandpaper, then clean with KBS Klean. For new, smooth, or shiny bare metal the same 400 grit light scuff applies before KBS Klean and RustBlast.
Yes. Applying RustSeal to a properly prepped bare surface provides the strongest and most durable foundation possible, because the coating penetrates into the pores of the metal and seals it. When bare metal application is not possible, applying RustSeal over an existing, properly prepared coating is still an excellent option.
Remove it. Use a wire wheel to take off every loose or failing area before surface preparation. A coating is only as sound as what it sits on, so anything that is already letting go has to come off first.
