Fusion SEP on Brass: Quick Facts

Metals: brass, copper, bronze, aluminum, steel, galvanized and chrome
Cleaning: KBS Klean at 25 parts hot water to 1 part for non-ferrous metals
Application temperature: 55 to 82F

Clean first, every time. The Fusion SEP directions call for cleaning bare metal with KBS Klean before the single covering coat. Wear protective gloves, which the directions require at all times, and keep bare hands off the cleaned brass.

How to Prime Brass With Fusion SEP

  1. Dilute KBS Klean at 25 parts hot water to 1 part KBS Klean, the ratio the KBS Klean directions give for non-ferrous metals like brass, copper and aluminum. Clean the brass, rinse, and let it dry completely.
  2. Stir the can well before and during use, or shake the aerosol until the mixing ball moves freely, for at least one minute.
  3. Apply one thin, covering coat. Hold the aerosol 10 to 14 inches from the surface and use steady, even strokes. If you need more coverage, apply 2 to 3 light to medium coats with 3 to 5 minutes between them.
  4. Wait 1 hour, then topcoat. Fusion SEP is dry to the touch in 15 minutes.

The Fusion SEP directions call for a clean, dry surface. They do not call for sanding bare metal before priming.

Brush, Roller, Spray Gun or Aerosol

Fusion SEP can be applied by brush, roller or spray gun, and it comes in an aerosol that suits small brass objects. For a spray gun, use 35 to 45 psi on siphon or pot guns and 25 to 35 psi on gravity or top cup guns, with a 1.0 to 1.2 tip. Thinning is not generally required; if it is, 5 to 10 percent KBS #1 Thinner is normally enough. Never thin Fusion SEP with lacquer thinner. More gun setup detail is in our Paint Spraying Guidelines.

Topcoats for Primed Brass

After 1 hour, topcoat with BlackTop, KBS MAXX, KBS Top Coater, KBS Top Coater Aerosol or Motor Coater. No sanding is needed if you topcoat within 24 hours. Between 24 hours and 7 days, you can skip the scuff only if the primed surface has stayed flawlessly clean, which is hard to do, so scuff with 300 grit if you are not sure. After 7 days, always scuff with 300 grit before topcoating. Fusion SEP withstands temperatures up to 250F once cured.
