Yes. Fusion SEP can be topcoated with an enamel such as Motor Coater, and that enamel can then be clear coated with DiamondFinish Clear or KBS MAXX Clear. Let the Fusion SEP dry for 1 hour before the enamel goes on, then wait at least 7 days after your last coat of Motor Coater before you apply the clear.
Primer, Enamel and Clear, Step by Step
- Clean the surface with KBS Klean and let it dry completely. Apply between 55 and 82F.
- Apply one thin, covering coat of Fusion SEP. One coat is generally all it needs. If you need more, apply 2 to 3 light to medium coats with 3 to 5 minutes between them.
- Wait 1 hour. Fusion SEP is dry to the touch in 15 minutes, but give it the full hour before topcoating.
- Apply Motor Coater in 1 to 2 thin coats. A second coat goes on within 30 minutes of the first, or after 7 days.
- If you want a clear, wait at least 7 days, then apply DiamondFinish Clear or KBS MAXX Clear. The clear is optional; Motor Coater does not need one.
Timing the Enamel Over Fusion SEP
No sanding is needed if you topcoat within 24 hours. Between 24 hours and 7 days, you can skip the scuff only if the primed surface has stayed flawlessly clean, which is hard to do, so scuff with 300 grit if you are not sure. After 7 days, always scuff with 300 grit before topcoating.
The full application details, including spray gun pressure and thinning, are on the Fusion SEP directions page.
Other Topcoats That Go Over Fusion SEP
Motor Coater is not the only option. After the 1 hour dry time, the Fusion SEP directions list BlackTop, KBS MAXX, KBS Top Coater and KBS Top Coater Aerosol as topcoats over Fusion SEP.
One thing to know on hot parts: Fusion SEP withstands temperatures up to 250F, while Motor Coater is rated to 500F. Motor Coater goes direct to metal on cast iron and aluminum with no primer, per the Motor Coater directions, so on parts that run hotter than 250F, skip the primer.
