Yes. Fusion SEP can go over factory paint. Clean the paint with KBS Klean, rinse, and let it dry completely. Apply one thin covering coat of Fusion SEP, wait 1 hour, then topcoat with BlackTop, KBS MAXX, KBS Top Coater, KBS Top Coater Aerosol or Motor Coater.
How to Prime Over Factory Paint
- Clean the factory paint with KBS Klean, rinse, and let the surface dry completely. The Fusion SEP directions call for a clean, dry surface; no scuffing step is needed.
- Apply one thin, covering coat of Fusion SEP between 55 and 82F. A single coat is generally all it needs.
- Wait 1 hour. Fusion SEP is dry to the touch in 15 minutes, but it needs the full hour before a topcoat.
- Topcoat. No sanding is needed if you topcoat within 24 hours. Between 24 hours and 7 days, you can skip the scuff only if the primed surface has stayed flawlessly clean, which is hard to do, so scuff with 300 grit if you are not sure. After 7 days, always scuff with 300 grit before topcoating.
Why a Primer Over Paint
Fusion SEP is an inter-coat primer as well as a bare metal primer. Its job is to promote adhesion between coatings, so the new topcoat has something to grip on a surface that is already painted. The same job is why Fusion SEP is the go-to primer for topcoating over fully cured RustSeal that has been in place for months or years.
Choosing the Topcoat
The Fusion SEP directions list BlackTop, KBS MAXX, KBS Top Coater and KBS Top Coater Aerosol over Fusion SEP after 1 hour, and Motor Coater engine enamel goes over it too. RustSeal is possible as well, as a non-standard application. It needs an opaque, UV-stable topcoat anywhere it sees sunlight.
