Yes. KBS MAXX is a two-component polyurethane that cures into a chemically cross-linked film, rated 2H pencil hardness at 72 hours and 160 inch-pounds of direct and indirect impact. That combination is what lets it resist scratching and chipping in daily use.

KBS MAXX Durability: Quick Facts

Pencil hardness: 2H at 72 hours
Impact: 160 inch-pounds, direct and indirect
Salt spray (B117): 1,000 hours alone, 2,000 hours over RustSeal
Full cure: usually at least 7 days
Go easy for the first week. KBS MAXX is dry hard in 3 to 4 hours, which means it resists handling and light abrasion. Full cure is a function of time, temperature, and film build and is usually at least 7 days, so hold off on hard use until then.

Why a 2K Coating Holds Up

KBS MAXX ships as a Base and a separate MAXX Activator. When you mix them, the isocyanate activator reacts with the base and the two chemically cross-link as the film cures. That cross-linked film is where KBS MAXX gets its hardness, chemical resistance, UV stability, and impact resistance.

KBS MAXX is also single stage. It delivers base coat and clear coat performance in one application, so the durable layer is the color itself and no separate clear coat is needed.

Getting the Most Durability Out of It

  • Clean the surface well with KBS Klean so it is free of grease, dirt, oil, and rust.
  • Over bare or rusted steel, use the KBS 3-Step System of KBS Klean, RustBlast, and RustSeal first. That is what takes the salt spray rating from 1,000 to 2,000 hours.
  • Mix the Base mechanically before adding the Activator. KBS MAXX is high solids, and the directions call mixing well the key to long term durability and appearance. See how to mix KBS MAXX.
  • Apply 1.5 to 2.0 mils dry film thickness per coat.

Frequently Asked Questions: KBS MAXX Durability

Yes. KBS MAXX cures to a chemically cross-linked 2K polyurethane film rated 2H pencil hardness at 72 hours and 160 inch-pounds of direct and indirect impact, which makes it highly resistant to scratching and chipping.
It is touch dry in 30 minutes and dry hard in 3 to 4 hours, when it resists handling and light abrasion. Full cure is a function of time, temperature, and film build, and is usually at least 7 days.
No. KBS MAXX is a single stage topcoat that delivers base coat and clear coat performance in one application, so no separate clear coat is needed.
Yes. It passes 100 MEK double rubs at 24 hours, rates excellent against lubricating and cutting oils, 10 percent hydrochloric acid, 10 percent acetic acid, 10 percent sodium hydroxide, and water immersion, and passes JP 5 jet fuel at 70 degrees F for 7 days.
Over bare or rusted steel, use the KBS 3-Step System of KBS Klean, RustBlast, and RustSeal before KBS MAXX. KBS MAXX alone is rated 1,000 hours of salt spray, and over RustSeal the system is rated 2,000 hours.
No. KBS MAXX is permanently UV stable and rated 1,000 hours QUV 313B, so color and gloss hold up in direct sun.
